INGROWN HAIRS
Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB) is also called ingrown hairs, razor bumps or razor burns.
It is a condition where the hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin causing inflammation. It may be accompanied by an infection of the hair follicle. Ingrown hair most commonly appears in areas where the skin is shaved eg beard, legs or pubic region. Ingrown hairs are more common among people with very curly hair.
The most common symptom of an ingrown hair is pain due to inflammation of the skin, followed by pus formation.
Many ingrown hairs will eventually grow out by themselves and don't need treatment.
Ingrown hairs can be prevented by shaving in the direction of hair growth, shaving once over the area only, and by using shavng creams.
At our practice we treat ingrown hairs by performing IPL hair removal, and by moderate chemical peels.
Skin lightening products are then given to remove the area of pigmentation caused by the ingrown hairs.
